President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for what he described as a swift and coordinated defence of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin following an attempted coup in the neighbouring country. The intervention, which was carried out on the invitation of the Beninese government, has drawn significant attention across West Africa.
In a formal statement, the President said the Nigerian forces acted strictly within the framework of the Economic Community of West African States Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. According to him, the operation helped stabilise a fragile political situation and demonstrated Nigerias long standing commitment to safeguarding democratic institutions in the region.
Tinubu praised the professionalism and discipline displayed by the Nigerian troops, stating that their actions reflect the values and principles the country has upheld since the return to democratic rule in 1999. He added that Nigeria will continue to defend democracy across the region, especially at a time when multiple countries in West Africa are facing threats of military takeover.
Defence analysts have noted that the quick response showcases Nigerias position as a central stabilising force within ECOWAS. The move is also expected to strengthen cooperation between Nigeria and Benin Republic on security matters, particularly in light of cross border threats including trafficking and insurgency.
Public reactions have been largely positive, with many Nigerians expressing pride in the armed forces for their role in preventing instability in West Africa. The Presidency stated that Nigeria will remain committed to supporting democratic governance and responding to threats that undermine peace in neighbouring countries.
