President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Director General of the Department of State Services Mr Adeola Ajayi following his recognition with an international press freedom award.
The award was presented by the International Press Institute in acknowledgement of Ajayi’s role in strengthening cooperation between security agencies and the media while maintaining national security standards.
President Tinubu described the honour as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing commitment to democratic values and responsible governance. He said the recognition showed that security institutions could protect the nation while respecting freedom of expression.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency the President commended the DSS leadership for adopting a more transparent engagement strategy with journalists and media organisations.
Tinubu noted that press freedom and national security must work together rather than stand in opposition. He said accurate information and responsible journalism were critical to national stability.
He urged security agencies to continue engaging the media professionally and to respect constitutional rights while carrying out their duties.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s support for press freedom and media independence. He stated that a free press was essential for accountability and good governance.
Media stakeholders have welcomed the recognition saying it signals a shift towards improved civil and media relations under the current leadership of the DSS.
Observers believe the award could strengthen trust between journalists and security agencies and reduce long standing tensions.
