French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged renewed French support for Nigeria in the battle against terrorism, after speaking with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Sunday. The call came amid mounting insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria.
In a post on his official X account, Macron wrote: “I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria, @officialABAT. I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North. At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator.”
The French leader’s commitment signals a deeper collaboration between Nigeria and France, targeting counter-terrorism efforts, intelligence sharing, and increased assistance to communities devastated by violence. Macron also urged other international partners to step up their engagement in supporting Nigeria’s security initiatives.
Nigeria has in recent weeks declared a national state of emergency following a wave of terrorist insurgencies, mass kidnappings, village raids and attacks on civilian communities. Many analysts see Macron’s show of solidarity as an endorsement of Nigeria’s efforts and a call for a coordinated international response.
The phone call between the two heads of state comes at a critical moment when public pressure is building for decisive actions to stem rising insecurity. With France now pledging support and global partners being called to action, the spotlight is back on Nigeria’s leadership to deliver sustainable security solutions and protect vulnerable populations across the affected regions.
