The Supreme Court has delivered judgment in the case filed by the Osun State Government challenging the Federal Government over the controversial local government administration and alleged interference in LG autonomy.
In its ruling, the apex court affirmed the Federal Government’s constitutional authority regarding the structure and operations of Nigeria’s local government system, but stressed that states must exercise their powers strictly within the framework of the Constitution.
The court held that while states possess the authority to manage local councils, no tier of government has the right to undermine democratic structures at the local level. The judgment effectively puts to rest the long-standing dispute between Osun State and the Federal Government.
Legal analysts say the ruling sets a precedent for other states currently in similar legal battles over local government autonomy.
