The Federal Government has confirmed that the Super Eagles’ match bonuses for the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be credited to players’ accounts before Friday.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, said the payments had cleared all regulatory stages and would reflect in the players’ domiciliary accounts “starting today or tomorrow.”
The development follows reports that the team threatened to boycott travel to Marrakesh for their quarter-final clash against Algeria on Saturday over unpaid allowances. The players have yet to receive bonuses for all four matches played at the tournament. Nigeria, currently the highest-scoring team in the competition with 12 goals, won all group-stage matches and defeated Mozambique 4–0 in the second round.
Uzoka-Anite explained that the delay resulted from the “conversion process to move funds into foreign currency,” a preference of the players, but said the process had been fast-tracked. She assured that future disbursements would be streamlined for faster and more predictable payments.
Earlier, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, said all financial entitlements of players and officials had been resolved, noting that President Bola Tinubu had approved the AFCON budget in November 2025. He clarified that while approval and processing are separate stages, the funds had now been released.
The Eagles are set to travel from Fez to Marrakesh for their quarter-final match, with the winner set to face either Morocco or Cameroon in the semi-final.
