Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi has spoken out against the recent terrorist attack on a church in Eruku, Kwara State, calling for peace and unity in the community.
Gunmen stormed a church in Eruku on the night of November 18, 2025, opening fire on worshippers. The incident left the town in shock, with police confirming two deaths and several injuries. Eyewitnesses also reported multiple abductions, according to Sahara Reporters. The attack has triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria, including strong reactions from public figures and footballers.
Awoniyi, who hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, joined those condemning the violence. In a post on social media, the former Hertha Berlin striker quoted Romans 12:18:
“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
He went on to praise Kwara’s long-standing reputation for peaceful coexistence across religious and ethnic lines:
“The State of Harmony is one of the most peaceful states, known for unity despite our different religions and beliefs.
Peace shall reign. Kwara State stands for peace — and that’s what must stand for Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, public anger continues to grow online. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded by deploying 900 additional troops to the affected area and postponing his planned trip to the G20 Summit in South Africa.
