Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has stated that a strategic alliance between the Southeast and Southwest regions represents the shortest route to achieving an Igbo presidency in Nigeria. He made the remarks during a political engagement with party stakeholders.
Kalu argued that Nigeria’s political reality requires coalition building and regional cooperation rather than isolated ambitions. According to him aligning interests between the two regions would create a formidable political bloc capable of influencing national outcomes.
He emphasized that the Southeast must engage constructively with other regions and demonstrate commitment to national unity. Kalu noted that historical mistrust and political fragmentation had previously hindered the region’s presidential aspirations.
The former governor also called on political leaders from the Southeast to prioritise internal cohesion and speak with one voice. He stressed that unity within the region was a prerequisite for effective negotiations.
Reactions to the statement have been mixed with some stakeholders welcoming the call for strategic alliance while others insist that broader national engagement is equally important.
The comments have reignited discussions around power rotation inclusiveness and the future of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
