Nigerian singer Shola Allyson has clarified why she does not explicitly mention the name of Jesus in her music, despite being widely regarded as a gospel artiste by many listeners.
Earlier in March 2025, Allyson faced criticism on social media after users questioned why she avoids directly referencing Jesus in her songs. Responding at the time via X, she stated that no one would pressure her into “joining their darkness that looks like light simply because indolent souls find comfort in it.”
Speaking in a new interview on Oyinmomo TV, Allyson finally addressed the matter in detail. She emphasised that she has never introduced herself as a gospel singer, saying:
“I’m not a religious singer. I have never called myself a gospel artiste. My name is Shola Allyson. I’m a singer.”
When asked about claims that she intentionally omits Jesus’ name from her music, she responded:
“Jesus did not instruct us to mention His name in songs, neither did He tell us to do PR for Him.”
Allyson’s comments have sparked fresh conversations around artistic identity, spirituality, and public expectations of musicians perceived to operate within faith-based genres.
