The Socio Economic Rights and Accountability Project has filed a lawsuit against state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory over the alleged failure to provide transparency in the use of security votes.

Security votes are special allocations provided to state executives and are often exempt from legislative scrutiny. SERAP argues that the secrecy surrounding these funds has enabled misuse and weakened accountability, particularly at a time when insecurity remains widespread.

In its legal filing, SERAP is seeking an order compelling the disclosure of security vote expenditures and the establishment of oversight mechanisms. The organisation insists that transparency does not compromise security but rather strengthens public trust.

Government officials have defended the practice, stating that security operations require discretion. However legal analysts say the case raises important constitutional questions about fiscal responsibility and executive powers.

The lawsuit has reignited national debate on governance reforms and the balance between security confidentiality and accountability.
