The Senate will reconvene for plenary on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, despite its earlier scheduled two-week recess.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo. According to the statement, the directive to reconvene was given by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, who instructed that all lawmakers be formally notified of the change in schedule.
Odo explained that the decision was taken to enable the Senate to deliberate on pressing national matters requiring urgent legislative attention. He stated that the plenary session would hold at 11:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber.
“I am directed by His Excellency, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, to inform all distinguished Senators that the Senate will reconvene plenary session as follows: Date: Tuesday, 17th February, 2026,” the statement read.
The Clerk further urged senators to adjust their personal and official engagements to ensure full attendance at the session. He stressed that the meeting would be critical, as important decisions affecting the country would be taken during the plenary.
“Consequently, all distinguished Senators are kindly requested to note and reschedule their engagements accordingly to enable them to attend, as very crucial decisions will be taken on national issues during the session,” Odo added.
The Senate had earlier announced a two-week break as part of its legislative calendar, making the sudden reconvening an indication of the urgency of the matters to be discussed. Further details on the agenda for the plenary session are yet to be officially disclosed.
