The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned the brutal attack on residents of Rukuba village in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, describing it as “gruesome and barbaric.” The Upper Chamber directed the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the incident, with the goal of apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators to face the full weight of the law.
In a show of solidarity, the Senate resolved to send a high-level delegation led by the Senate President to the affected communities to condole with victims and their families. The lawmakers also urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to mobilize agencies to deliver relief materials to the area. A minute of silence was observed in honour of those killed.
The resolutions followed a motion titled, “Urgent need to upscale security operations in Kanam and Jos North Local Government Areas of Plateau State,” moved by Senator Diket Plang (APC, Plateau Central) and seconded by Senators Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South) and Pam Dachungyan (APC, Plateau North).
The attacks occurred on March 29, 2026, in Anguwan Rukuba, leaving scores dead and many injured. Senator Plang, in presenting the motion, lamented that Plateau, once celebrated as a peaceful and tourist-friendly state, has suffered repeated crises over the past decades. He noted that despite federal and state efforts to maintain stability, the region’s recent attacks including a prior assault in Kanam Local Government have shattered the fragile peace.
Describing the Jos North incident as “well-coordinated and targeted at defenseless citizens in a densely populated area,” Plang highlighted the state’s complex ethnic and religious dynamics, warning that the violence appears to have no specific target but resembles acts of terrorism. He stressed that these recurrent attacks are undermining the harmony and security Plateau was once known for.
The Senate adopted the motion following a voice vote by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), reaffirming its commitment to restore security, bring perpetrators to justice, and support victims of the violence.
