Leaders of the Social Democratic Party and other dignitaries on Monday received the remains of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Among those present were the SDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al Makura, party leaders, lawmakers and supporters. Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, died last Wednesday at an Indian hospital at the age of 52. His body was later taken to the National Hospital, Abuja.
Speaking with journalists, Adebayo described the late senator as one of the strongest pillars of the party, saying his death was a devastating loss to his family, Nasarawa State and the nation. He noted that Akwashiki was widely respected across party lines and left behind a legacy of integrity and service.
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Jonathan Gbefwi, said the loss was heartbreaking, describing Akwashiki as a seasoned legislator, devoted family man and committed public servant. He added that the Egon nation had been deeply affected by the tragedy.
The Acting National Chairman of the SDP, Dr Sadiq Gombe, said the party was greatly saddened, noting that the late senator’s death was a major loss to Nigeria’s democracy. The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Dr Danadi Jato, also described Akwashiki as a hardworking and dedicated legislator.
Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re elected in 2023. He previously served as Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
