The prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is facing renewed scrutiny following warnings from the Attorney General of the Federation and the Chief Justice of Nigeria about alleged abuse of influence in the legal profession.
Both senior officials emphasized that the SAN title must remain a symbol of excellence, integrity, and professional merit rather than political connection or personal lobbying. Their remarks come amid growing debate within legal circles over the credibility of the selection process.
The Chief Justice stressed that the legal profession depends heavily on public trust and ethical conduct. He noted that any perception of favoritism or compromised standards could weaken confidence in the judiciary and the broader justice system.
Similarly, the Attorney General called for stricter adherence to established guidelines, saying the rank should be reserved for lawyers who demonstrate outstanding advocacy skills, sound knowledge of the law, and a record of professional discipline. He warned that attempts to use influence to secure the title would damage the reputation of the bar.
Legal analysts say the SAN rank carries significant prestige and often leads to greater professional opportunities, making it highly sought after. This has fueled concerns that some candidates may attempt to leverage personal networks rather than rely solely on merit.
The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, responsible for conferring the rank, has also faced pressure to increase transparency in its evaluation process. Calls have grown for clearer criteria, independent assessments, and stricter vetting of applicants’ ethical records.
Senior lawyers have welcomed the intervention of the AGF and CJN, describing it as necessary to protect the integrity of the profession. They argue that maintaining high standards will encourage younger lawyers to prioritize competence and ethics over connections.
Observers say the renewed attention on the SAN process reflects broader efforts to strengthen institutions and promote accountability. They note that reforms within the legal system can have far reaching effects on governance, investor confidence, and citizens’ access to justice.
The warnings signal that authorities are prepared to take a firmer stance in safeguarding the honor associated with the SAN title.
