Russia Breaks Silence, Cautions US Over Nigeria Threat

Russia has voiced concern over the escalating diplomatic tension between the United States and Nigeria following U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning of possible military action against the West African nation.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow is “closely monitoring” developments and urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and restraint over threats.

“Russia calls for respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and a commitment to peaceful engagement,” the statement read. “We believe that stability in Nigeria is essential to the broader security of the African continent.”

The Kremlin’s response follows global criticism of Trump’s remarks earlier in the week, which hinted at potential sanctions or military measures against Nigeria over alleged policy disagreements.

Analysts say Russia’s intervention highlights its growing diplomatic influence in Africa and its efforts to position itself as a counterbalance to U.S. dominance on the continent.

Moscow reaffirmed its readiness to work with the African Union and the United Nations to promote peace and dialogue, while warning against any actions that could further destabilize the region.
