Road safety authorities have issued a fresh warning to motorists following a multiple vehicle crash in Lagos that left several people injured and disrupted traffic along a major corridor of the city. The incident, which involved commercial buses, private cars and a truck, has renewed concerns about speeding, poor vehicle maintenance and disregard for traffic regulations in Nigeria’s busiest metropolis.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that the crash occurred during peak hours, causing significant congestion and delaying thousands of commuters. Emergency responders, including paramedics and traffic officials, were deployed to the scene to rescue victims and clear the roadway.
Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speed and reckless driving were major contributing factors. Authorities said one of the vehicles allegedly lost control, triggering a chain reaction that affected several others. Although no fatalities were immediately confirmed, multiple occupants sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The Federal Road Safety Corps described the incident as another avoidable crash resulting from human error rather than mechanical failure or road conditions. FRSC officials stressed that Lagos records a high volume of traffic daily and that motorists must exercise patience, especially during rush hours.
Road safety experts have long warned that aggressive driving habits, distracted driving and poor adherence to speed limits remain major causes of accidents in urban centres. They also noted that many commercial vehicles operate without proper roadworthiness certification, increasing the risk of crashes.
In response to the incident, traffic authorities said enforcement would be intensified, particularly on highways and busy urban roads. Officials urged drivers to obey speed limits, avoid phone use while driving and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before taking to the road.
Commuters who witnessed the crash expressed frustration over recurring accidents on Lagos roads. Many blamed weak enforcement and poor driver training, especially among commercial drivers who operate under pressure to meet daily targets.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to improving road safety through stricter monitoring, public awareness campaigns and collaboration with federal agencies. Authorities warned that reckless drivers would face penalties, including fines, license suspension and possible prosecution.
As investigations continue, road safety agencies appealed to motorists to see traffic rules not as obstacles but as life saving measures designed to protect all road users.
