Arise Television host Rufai Oseni has warned that the planned impeachment of Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State highlights potential weaknesses in President Bola Tinubu’s influence over governors in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Oseni argued that allowing the impeachment to proceed would signal a failure on the part of the President to protect APC governors. In a Facebook post, he stated that the process undermines previous measures, including the state of emergency reportedly declared to stabilise Rivers politics.
“If Fubara is impeached, then it’s a big indictment on President Tinubu’s ability to protect APC governors,” Oseni wrote. He noted that the state of emergency, intended to ensure peace and settlement, appears ineffective as the impeachment moves forward.
Oseni also highlighted the prominent role of former Governor Nyesom Wike in the ongoing political struggle. “One thing is certain currently: Wike is leading in this fight. Wike 100, President Tinubu 50,” he said. He questioned whether Tinubu would intervene to support Fubara or allow the impeachment process to continue, and whether the judiciary, including the Chief Judge, would uphold or halt the proceedings.
The situation raises broader concerns about APC unity in Rivers State, the ability of the federal leadership to mediate state-level disputes, and the potential realignment of local political alliances. Analysts note that the outcome could have implications not only for Fubara and Tinubu but for the APC’s standing in a key state ahead of future elections.
As the impeachment process unfolds, observers are watching closely to see whether presidential influence, judicial authority, or political alliances will determine the next chapter in Rivers politics.
