A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area on Friday restrained the Rivers State House of Assembly from taking further steps towards the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The court issued an interim injunction barring the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the Assembly, and other lawmakers from forwarding any correspondence, resolution, or articles of impeachment to the Chief Judge of the state.
Justice F.A. Fiberesima, who presided over the matter, also restrained the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, processing, or acting on any communication from the Assembly aimed at constituting a panel to investigate allegations of misconduct against the governor and his deputy.
The ruling followed a motion ex parte filed separately by Fubara and Odu, seeking urgent judicial intervention to stop the impeachment process. The court granted leave for substituted service of the interim order and originating processes on the defendants by pasting the documents at the gate of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters.
The judge further directed that the court processes be served on the Chief Judge through any judicial staff at his chambers within the High Court premises.
Justice Fiberesima adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for the hearing of the substantive motion.
Despite the court order, the House of Assembly reportedly resolved on Friday to proceed with the impeachment process. Four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn their support for the move also reversed their decision, accusing the governor of refusing to cooperate with the legislature.
