The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) – Relief Fund Trust has expressed deep concern over the continuous rise in fuel prices in Nigeria, warning that the trend is exacerbating economic hardship for citizens. The statement was issued on Monday by Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the Country Director of the organisation.
According to the IHRC, the persistent increase in fuel prices is placing a heavy burden on ordinary Nigerians, driving up transportation costs, inflating food prices, and contributing to an overall rise in the cost of living. “The continuous rise in fuel prices in Nigeria is causing growing hardship for ordinary citizens,” the statement said.
The organisation highlighted that Nigeria is an oil-producing country with significant petroleum resources and some refining capacity, making the situation difficult for many to comprehend. “While global oil prices fluctuate, Nigerians expect that the nation’s natural resources should provide some economic relief and shared benefits,” it noted.
IHRC emphasised that the reality on the ground is quite different. Rising fuel prices are adding pressure on households already facing financial challenges, increasing economic vulnerability and straining family budgets. The organisation described the situation as a matter that demands urgent attention and responsible leadership.
The statement called on Nigerian authorities to act with transparency and a strong sense of responsibility toward citizens. “We urge the country’s leadership to respond with urgency and to prioritise the welfare of the people in managing national resources,” it added.
In addition, the IHRC appealed to stakeholders, particularly members of the National Assembly, to review the situation carefully and take measures to alleviate the growing concern. The group stressed that protecting the wellbeing of Nigerians should remain central to the management of the country’s resources.
“The wellbeing of the Nigerian people must remain a top priority in the stewardship of our national wealth,” the statement concluded, reiterating the need for immediate and decisive action to address rising fuel costs and the resultant economic pressures on citizens.
