The House of Representatives has donated N20 million to the family of the late Vice Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, Hassan Makuku, who was killed during last week’s bandit attack on the school. The assault, which also saw the abduction of more than two dozen students, has intensified national concerns over rising insecurity in the North-West.
A high-powered delegation led by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen visited Kebbi State on Monday to commiserate with the families of the victims. During the visit, Abbas urged Governor Nasir Idris to immortalise Makuku by renaming the school in his honour, describing him as a symbol of courage and sacrifice.
In a statement by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, Abbas praised the late vice principal’s bravery, noting that he died while attempting to shield students from the attackers. “This is a man who died in active service, a public servant who gave his life so that others could live. We pray that Allah grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” he said.
The Speaker added that the N20 million donation was intended to support the deceased’s family and provide startup capital in the absence of their breadwinner.
Abbas described the incident as a tragic setback at a time when both President Bola Tinubu and Governor Idris are making significant efforts to strengthen national security. He stressed that the attack serves as a wake-up call for leaders at all levels to intensify strategic efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
