Joe Pyfer delivered a stunning performance to defeat former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya via technical knockout in the second round at a Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Seattle, United States, on Sunday.
Fighting in his second UFC main event, Pyfer rose to the occasion with a dominant display, securing a ground-and-pound stoppage inside the Climate Pledge Arena.
Adesanya started the bout strongly, showcasing his trademark striking with sharp jabs and punishing leg kicks that helped him control distance and neutralise Pyfer’s early takedown attempts. Despite a brief late takedown from Pyfer in the opening round, Adesanya appeared composed and in control.
The momentum, however, shifted dramatically in the second round. Adesanya continued to target Pyfer’s body and head while damaging his lead leg with precise strikes. But Pyfer responded by closing the distance effectively, landing a sharp uppercut followed by heavy hooks that pushed Adesanya onto the back foot.
A decisive exchange altered the course of the fight after Adesanya connected with a head kick, only for Pyfer to counter with a powerful left hook. Seizing the moment, Pyfer secured a body lock, brought Adesanya to the canvas, and quickly advanced into dominant grappling positions.
From there, Pyfer unleashed relentless ground-and-pound, transitioning to mount and landing a series of elbows and punches that forced the referee to stop the contest.
The victory marks a major statement for Pyfer in the middleweight division, positioning him as a rising contender while dealing a setback to Adesanya’s attempt to reclaim title contention.
Speaking after the bout, Pyfer made an emotional revelation, stating that he had battled personal struggles leading up to the fight.
“I almost took my own life a couple weeks ago, but I found God,” he said.
