Vladimir Putin has held talks with Masoud Pezeshkian, offering Russia’s support to help ease rising tensions in the Middle East following the collapse of negotiations between Iran and the United States.
According to a Kremlin readout of the call, Putin expressed readiness to facilitate diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis and promoting a lasting peace in the region. He reiterated Russia’s willingness to act as a mediator in the ongoing conflict.
The development came shortly after the complete withdrawal of the U.S. negotiating team from talks held in Islamabad, Pakistan. A U.S. official confirmed that no members of the delegation remained in the capital to continue back-channel discussions after negotiations failed to produce meaningful progress.
The American delegation reportedly included key figures such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who had been leading efforts to find a diplomatic resolution. However, despite extended discussions, the talks ended without agreement.
During a stopover at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, an official travelling with JD Vance confirmed that all negotiators had departed, putting an end to speculation that discussions might continue informally.
Iranian officials also expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the talks. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the U.S. failed to build trust during the negotiations.
According to him, the Iranian delegation presented constructive proposals, but the American side was unable to establish the level of confidence required to reach an agreement.
The breakdown in talks has raised concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East, with renewed uncertainty over diplomatic efforts to manage the crisis.
