The Presidency has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra of spreading what it described as false narratives and propaganda about an alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, warning that such claims are capable of inflaming tensions and damaging national cohesion.
In a statement issued by presidential spokespersons, the government dismissed reports circulating online that portray Nigeria as a state systematically targeting Christians. The Presidency described the claims as misleading, dangerous and unsupported by verifiable evidence.
According to the statement, Nigeria remains a multi religious society where security challenges affect citizens across religious and ethnic lines. The government argued that criminal violence, insurgency and banditry are driven by complex socio economic and security factors rather than a coordinated religious agenda.
The Presidency accused IPOB of exploiting sensitive religious issues to gain international sympathy and advance separatist objectives. Officials warned that such narratives could undermine efforts to restore peace and stability, particularly in regions already affected by insecurity.
Security analysts note that claims of religious persecution have gained traction on social media and in diaspora circles, prompting concerns about misinformation influencing foreign perceptions of Nigeria. The federal government has repeatedly engaged diplomatic partners to counter what it sees as exaggerated or distorted portrayals of the country.
Christian and Muslim leaders have also urged restraint, emphasizing the need for unity and accurate reporting. Several religious organizations have acknowledged security challenges but cautioned against framing them in ways that could deepen divisions.
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of faith and called on community leaders, civil society groups and the media to verify information before dissemination. It warned that spreading false narratives could worsen communal mistrust and hinder national security efforts.
