Veteran Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter, Toun Soetan, popularly known as Evangelist Shouet, has passed away at the age of 73. The late evangelist was a highly respected figure in the Nigerian gospel music industry and is widely celebrated for her enduring contributions to Christian music.
Toun Soetan gained national recognition as the original composer of the iconic Christian chorus, “Darling Jesus”, a song that continues to resonate in churches across Nigeria. Her music, known for its spiritual depth and lyrical richness, has inspired countless worshippers and musicians alike. In addition to her signature hit, she produced other notable songs such as “Ke Pe Jesu” and “Cast Your Burdens”, which have become staples in Christian worship services.
Her passing elicited heartfelt reactions from colleagues and fans in the entertainment industry. Alhaji Kunle Bakare, former Secretary of the Oyo State chapter of the Entertainment Writers Association of Nigeria, described her as a “divinely gifted minister whose songs carried powerful spiritual messages.” He added that beyond her musical talents, Toun Soetan was also dedicated to nurturing the next generation of gospel musicians.
“The late gospel music player will also be remembered for her music college, where she trained many gospel artists, most of whom are reigning today,” Bakare said. Her influence, therefore, extends beyond her recordings to the many lives she shaped through mentorship and musical education.
Gospel musician Peters Olaniyi Olusegun also shared the sad news on social media, paying tribute to her legacy. “We just lost another legend this morning, Mummy Toun Soetan. May the Lord be with the family and Daddy Titus Soetan,” he wrote on Facebook, highlighting the personal and professional impact she had on those around her.
Toun Soetan’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian gospel music. Her songs, teachings, and dedication to gospel artistry have left an indelible mark, ensuring that her legacy will continue to influence and inspire worshippers and musicians for generations to come. The gospel community, and indeed Nigeria, mourns the loss of a true musical icon whose voice and spirit will be dearly missed.
