Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and the All Progressives Congress APC in Abia State have criticized Governor Alex Otti over what they described as an attack on a journalist. The Peoples Democratic Party PDP and the All Progressives Congress APC are two of Nigeria’s major political parties and key actors in the evolving 2027 political landscape.

The controversy followed reports that a journalist was allegedly harassed after publishing a critical report on the state government. Opposition figures claimed the development reflects growing intolerance toward dissenting voices, especially as political alignments begin to shape ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Abia chapter of the PDP accused the governor of undermining press freedom and urged security agencies to ensure journalists can operate without fear. Similarly, an APC chieftain in the state described the incident as troubling and warned that democratic governance requires accountability and openness to criticism.

However, sources close to the state government denied any official directive targeting the journalist. They insisted that the administration respects media freedom and urged stakeholders to avoid politicizing routine law enforcement matters.

Media advocacy groups have called for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. They argue that the protection of journalists is critical to sustaining democratic institutions.

Political analysts say the dispute may intensify as 2027 approaches. Abia remains a battleground state, and both ruling and opposition parties are positioning strategically.

Observers stress that maintaining press freedom will be essential to credible electoral processes. As tensions rise, stakeholders are urging restraint and commitment to democratic norms.
