The Nigeria Police Force has clarified that the N100 million paid into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the outgoing Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, was a banking error and was immediately reversed.
The clarification followed online reports alleging that the funds were transferred from the security vote account of the Anambra State Government. Reacting to the allegation, the police denied any wrongdoing and insisted that the transaction was a mistake promptly corrected once it was discovered.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, the Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin said the transfer was reported by Victor himself as soon as he noticed it.
Hundeyin explained that following public claims by Omoyele Sowore that N100 million had been paid into the IGP’s son’s account, he immediately contacted Victor Egbetokun for clarification. According to him, Victor confirmed that he saw the money in his account unexpectedly and instructed his accounts officer to reverse the transaction without delay.
“He said he noticed N100 million in his account and immediately directed that the money be returned, which was done,” Hundeyin stated.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that Victor printed his bank statement and submitted it to the police to show evidence that the funds had been reversed. He added that the account in question has since been closed and that Victor has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission requesting a full investigation into the allegation.
Hundeyin stressed that the transfer was purely a banking error and that the money was returned to the state government’s account shortly after the mistake was identified. He maintained that there was no criminal intent or wrongdoing involved, describing the incident as a case of mistaken payment rather than corruption.
