The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced a 12-hour restriction of movement across Abuja on February 21, ahead of the Federal Capital Territory Area Councils’ elections.

According to the command, the restriction will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day. The measure applies to all residents, with exemptions for essential service providers and individuals officially involved in the electoral process.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who said the decision was aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections and maintaining public order. She added that comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place across the territory to support a peaceful and orderly process.

Adeh stated that the security operation would involve the deployment of personnel from multiple agencies working jointly. These include the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

She quoted the FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, as directing officers deployed for election duty to conduct themselves professionally and respect the rights of citizens. The commissioner also instructed personnel to remain vigilant, impartial and courteous throughout the exercise.

The police command further appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies and comply with the movement restriction and other operational guidelines during the election period.

Dantawaye assured voters that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election, encouraging eligible voters to participate without fear. He also urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities through the police emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
