The Gombe State Police Command has refuted viral social media claims alleging that gunmen attacked an ECWA Church in Kashere, Akko Local Government Area. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Buhari Abdullahi, described the circulating report as completely untrue and capable of causing needless panic among residents.
According to the Command, the rumour claimed that worshippers were abducted during a church service. However, officers attached to Pindiga Division and the Kashere Police Outstation were immediately directed to verify the situation. Upon contacting one of the church elders—who was present during the Hausa segment of the worship service—it was confirmed that no attack, disruption, or suspicious movement occurred at the church.
The elder further acknowledged that police operatives had been stationed at the premises throughout Sunday as part of routine security measures, ensuring safety for all worshippers. Abdullahi emphasized that the presence of officers at the location reaffirmed that the claims circulating online had no basis.
Describing the rumour as “irresponsible,” the Command warned that spreading false information, especially about sensitive security issues, has the potential to incite fear and destabilize communities. Abdullahi added that efforts are underway to trace the source of the misinformation, promising that appropriate action will be taken against individuals behind the fake news.
The police urged residents to remain calm, rely on verified information, and report any suspicious activity through official channels. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting all citizens across Gombe State.
