The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has confirmed an attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church, located in Katchuan Iruan, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed that the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Thursday and was allegedly carried out by suspected arsonists.
According to him, the attackers set parts of the church premises ablaze, destroying vital church records kept in the sacristy. Two vehicles parked within the compound were also torched, including a Lexus 350 Jeep belonging to the priest and a Toyota Corolla.
Eitokpah stated that no suspects have been identified so far, but investigations are ongoing to determine those responsible for the attack. He assured that the public would be informed once any arrests are made.
“So far, the scene has been visited, photographs taken, the case incidented and referred to Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation,” he said.
The police command emphasized its commitment to uncovering the perpetrators behind what it described as an unfortunate criminal act.
