The Lagos State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old suspect over an alleged N20 million ransom demand and threat-to-life case, reinforcing ongoing efforts to tackle crime across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed the development during a media briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja. He explained that the arrest followed a carefully planned decoy operation based on credible intelligence.

According to the police, the case was reported by officials from the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, who alerted authorities to threats issued alongside a demand for a N20 million ransom. Acting swiftly, operatives were deployed to track the suspect and prevent further escalation.

The suspect was apprehended on March 27 while attempting to collect the ransom during a sting operation coordinated by law enforcement officers. Items recovered at the scene included an HP laptop and a flash drive, both of which are currently undergoing forensic examination as part of the investigation.

Police authorities revealed that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation. He also reportedly admitted involvement in a prior attempted burglary at a commercial bank, raising concerns about a pattern of criminal activity.

The commissioner noted that the arrest forms part of intensified efforts by the command to curb kidnapping, extortion, and other violent crimes in Lagos State. He stressed that intelligence-led policing remains central to achieving improved security outcomes.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or in collaboration with others. Authorities say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend any accomplices linked to the case.

The police assured residents that the suspect will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations, in line with the law. Tijani also reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining public safety and order across the state.

He issued a stern warning to criminal elements, urging them to desist from unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law, as security agencies continue to strengthen surveillance and enforcement operations throughout Lagos.
