Police in Ogun State have arrested 14 individuals suspected to be members of rival cult groups during a coordinated security operation aimed at curbing violent crime.
The arrests were made following intelligence reports linking the suspects to recent clashes and criminal activities in parts of the state. Law enforcement officials said the operation was carried out across several locations known for cult related violence.
During the raids, officers reportedly recovered dangerous weapons, including firearms, cutlasses, and locally made guns. Several vehicles believed to have been used in criminal operations were also impounded.
Police authorities stated that cult related activities have contributed to rising insecurity, including armed robbery, assault, and intimidation of residents. The command emphasized its commitment to dismantling criminal networks and restoring public confidence.
Community members have often raised concerns about the influence of cult groups, particularly among youths. Some residents say cult violence has led to injuries, deaths, and disruption of social and economic life.
Security experts note that cultism in parts of southern Nigeria has evolved beyond campus based groups into organized criminal networks with access to weapons. They argue that sustained intelligence driven policing and community engagement are necessary to address the root causes.
The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of preliminary inquiries. Authorities also urged parents and guardians to monitor their children’s activities and discourage involvement in violent groups.
Residents have welcomed the operation, expressing hope that consistent enforcement will reduce crime and improve safety across the state.
