Governor Caleb Mutfwang has convened an expanded State Security Council meeting involving heads of security agencies and chairmen of the 17 local government areas in Plateau State, as authorities intensify efforts to address escalating violence.
The meeting, held at the Government House in Jos, followed a surge in attacks across several communities that have reportedly claimed at least 50 lives within the past week. According to a statement issued by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the gathering focused on reviewing the deteriorating security situation and mapping out strategies to prevent further bloodshed while promoting peaceful coexistence.
Speaking after the session, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, said the meeting provided a platform for security stakeholders to assess recent developments and strengthen coordination among agencies. He disclosed that the state government has adjusted the curfew hours, which will now run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with strict enforcement measures in place.
Ewah warned that anyone found violating the curfew would face prosecution, adding that restrictions on commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations remain effective. He also dismissed circulating reports suggesting planned protests, insisting that the state remains calm and under control.
“The government is impartial and not aligned with any religious group. All actions taken are geared toward restoring peace,” he said, urging residents to cooperate with security agencies.
Also contributing, the state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hamisu Anani, explained that local councils are adopting tailored approaches to tackle insecurity based on their unique challenges. He emphasized ongoing collaboration between local authorities and security operatives to improve intelligence gathering and response.
Other key figures present at the meeting included Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo, security adviser Gagji Shipi, and the Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba.
