A deadly fire incident occurred in Anambra State on Sunday when a petrol tanker exploded, killing one person and destroying at least six shops. The explosion took place in a busy commercial area, causing widespread panic as flames quickly spread to nearby buildings.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker was passing through the area when it suddenly lost balance and toppled over, spilling its contents across the road. The leaked fuel ignited almost immediately, triggering a powerful explosion that sent residents and traders running for safety.
Emergency responders, including officials of the Anambra State Fire Service, arrived promptly to battle the blaze. However, one victim was burnt beyond recognition before help could reach him. Several others reportedly sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Six shops, including those dealing in household goods, provisions, and electronics, were completely gutted. Heartbroken traders lamented their losses, describing the incident as a tragic setback that destroyed their entire businesses within minutes.
Authorities have since sealed off the affected area as investigations begin into the cause of the tanker accident and explosion. The Anambra State Government has urged motorists—particularly tanker drivers—to adhere strictly to safety regulations.
Officials also assured residents that proactive steps are being taken to minimize similar disasters, while expressing condolences to the family of the deceased and support for affected shop owners.
