Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a monthly transportation allowance of N10,000 for civil servants in the state to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices and transportation costs. The announcement was made on Monday during his supervision of the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub in Oyo town.
The governor disclosed that the allowance will be paid for an initial period of three months, starting from March. Details regarding the disbursement guidelines and procedures are expected to be communicated through official government channels in due course.
Makinde emphasized that the initiative is part of the state government’s strategic response to current economic challenges, particularly the rising cost of transportation caused by the ongoing energy crisis. He noted that the surge in fuel prices has had a significant impact on workers’ welfare, productivity, and overall morale.
“The provision of this transportation support is designed to ease the financial burden on civil servants while ensuring that ministries, departments, and agencies continue to deliver services efficiently,” the governor said. He added that the scheme aims to sustain operational efficiency across the state’s public service while providing immediate relief to employees struggling with increased commuting expenses.
Officials at the programme highlighted that the initiative aligns with broader government efforts to mitigate the effects of economic pressures on state workers, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted despite rising living costs.
Civil servants welcomed the announcement, describing the allowance as a timely intervention that will help offset some of the financial strains associated with higher fuel and transport costs. Stakeholders also commended the Oyo State government for implementing practical measures to protect workers’ welfare amid the challenging economic climate.
Governor Makinde’s move reflects a growing trend among Nigerian states to provide targeted support to public employees as the country grapples with fluctuating petroleum prices and the ripple effects on transportation and daily living expenses.
