Dangote Petroleum Refinery has warned that petrol pump prices in Nigeria could rise to as much as N1,400 per litre if the country relies entirely on fuel imports, highlighting the stabilising role of large-scale domestic refining.
The refinery dismissed recent claims that it was shutting down for maintenance, describing the reports as false, misleading, and deliberately circulated to justify increases in fuel prices.
“Without the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, fuel importers would continue to operate without restraint, with petrol prices potentially reaching N1,400 per litre in a post-subsidy environment,” the company said on Monday. “Our operations serve as a critical stabilising force in the downstream petroleum market.”
The refinery accused fuel importers of spreading the misinformation to protect their commercial interests and exploit Nigerians through unjustified price hikes.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery said production remains uninterrupted, with daily output of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) between 40 million and 50 million litres, depending on demand. On January 4, the refinery produced 50 million litres of PMS and evacuated 48 million litres, maintaining stock levels sufficient for more than 20 days of national consumption.
It clarified that routine maintenance on certain processing units does not affect overall output due to the integrated design of its facilities. Other critical units, including the Naphtha Hydrotreater, CCR Reformer, and Hydrocracker, remain fully operational, supplying PMS, Automotive Gas Oil, and Jet A-1 to the domestic market.
The refinery reaffirmed its ex-gantry price of N699 per litre, available to all marketers and bulk consumers. It encouraged filling stations and large-scale users to patronise locally refined products to moderate prices, conserve foreign exchange, and support economic recovery.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery urged the public to rely on verified information and ignore false reports, reiterating its commitment to steady supply, energy security, and national economic stability.
