Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the House of Representatives for refusing to criminalise vote buying during party primaries. Obi expressed his views in a post on X where he voiced deep disappointment.
He said Nigerians expect lawmakers to take a firm stand against vote buying which he described as a fundamental threat to democracy. According to him allowing inducement at the primary stage undermines the entire electoral process.
Obi argued that credible elections cannot be built on corrupt foundations. He warned that legitimising bribery and inducement weakens democratic institutions and erodes public trust.
The former Anambra State governor said lawmakers missed an opportunity to strengthen democracy and promote transparency within political parties.
His comments have sparked debate among political observers civil society groups and citizens. Many have echoed his concerns calling for electoral reforms.
The House of Representatives has yet to formally respond to the criticism. The issue is expected to remain central to discussions on electoral integrity ahead of future elections.
