Former Nigerian international Peter Ijeh has called on the Super Eagles to channel their disappointment from missing the World Cup into a determined push at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Having witnessed Nigeria fail to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups, the ex-Malmö FF striker insists it is time for the team to move past the heartbreak and focus on the upcoming tournament with renewed determination.
“The setback of missing the World Cup shouldn’t crush them, it should motivate them. AFCON is a chance to make amends, and the players must take it,” Ijeh said, highlighting the importance of turning frustration into fuel for performance.
He believes Nigeria still boasts one of the continent’s most talented squads but stresses that success will hinge on both selection and mindset.
“We have quality players. The best must be chosen, the team must be focused, and everyone must commit fully. No distractions, no excuses, just the drive to win for the country,” he added.
Ijeh emphasised that while missing the World Cup remains a bitter blow for both players and fans, there is little time to dwell on it.
With AFCON approaching in weeks, he warned that the squad must recover emotionally to avoid disappointment on the continental stage.
“The Nigerian fans are eager for results, not explanations. AFCON is the next chance, they must convert their frustration into energy and show Africa the strength of the Super Eagles,” he said.
For Ijeh, the message is clear: the World Cup is over, but AFCON is here, and the Super Eagles must respond with fire.
