After an illustrious 39-year career, Nancy Pelosi, the only woman ever to serve as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has announced her decision to step down and not seek reelection.

Pelosi, 85, who has represented San Francisco since 1987, made history in 2007 when she first took the Speaker’s gavel — a role she would later reclaim in 2019. Her leadership saw the passage of landmark legislation, including the Affordable Care Act, and the management of two impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump, who is now serving as President of the United States.

In her farewell announcement, Pelosi said it was time for “a new generation” to rise in Congress, describing her journey as “the honor of a lifetime.” Her decision marks the end of a defining era for Democrats and American politics.

Reactions have poured in across the political divide. Democrats hailed her as a trailblazer and a symbol of resilience, while President Donald Trump reacted sharply, calling her retirement “a great thing for America,” echoing the fiery tone that often characterized their political clashes.

Pelosi’s departure leaves a significant leadership vacuum within the Democratic Party and sets the stage for a generational shift in Washington ahead of the 2026 elections.
