The Peoples Democratic Party has described Nigeria’s current diplomatic situation as an all time low, urging President Bola Tinubu to immediately withdraw the recently submitted ambassadorial nominee list.
The opposition party made the call in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, on Sunday.
According to the PDP, the delay in appointing substantive ambassadors and the recent list of nominees reflect what it described as a lack of seriousness in the management of Nigeria’s foreign policy.
The party said Nigeria’s diplomatic missions across the world have been left without permanent leadership for too long, allegedly weakening the country’s international influence and credibility.
The PDP also raised concerns over the quality and composition of the ambassadorial nominees, claiming that the list was allegedly driven by political patronage rather than national interest and professional competence.
Ologunagba said the party believes the list, if allowed to stand, would further damage the country’s already strained diplomatic standing.
He urged the President to urgently review the nominations and replace them with individuals who possess the required experience, integrity and understanding of international relations.
The PDP also called on the National Assembly to thoroughly scrutinise the nominees in the interest of national development and Nigeria’s global image.
The party maintained that Nigeria deserves a foreign service leadership that reflects professionalism, strategic thinking and commitment to the nation’s long term interests.
