Political tension escalated in Zamfara State on Sunday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) exchanged sharp words following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to assign Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to lead a federal delegation to Kebbi State. The development sparked heated reactions, with both parties accusing each other of political desperation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PDP in Zamfara criticized the President’s move, alleging that Matawalle’s assignment was an attempt to reposition the former governor ahead of future political contests. The party argued that despite being under scrutiny over his stewardship as governor, Matawalle was being elevated rather than held accountable. PDP leaders claimed the visit to Kebbi was “politically motivated” and designed to rebuild Matawalle’s influence in the Northwest.
Responding swiftly, the APC dismissed the PDP’s allegations as baseless and rooted in fear. The party insisted that Matawalle’s visit to Kebbi was a national assignment tied to his ministerial role and had nothing to do with partisan politics. APC leaders accused the PDP of using every opportunity to attack the former governor instead of focusing on constructive opposition.
The APC further argued that Matawalle remains a key figure in President Tinubu’s security architecture, noting that his deployment to Kebbi was a routine responsibility.
Analysts say the exchange reflects rising political tension across the Northwest as both parties position themselves for greater influence. The rivalry in Zamfara is expected to intensify, especially as political actors begin early maneuvering ahead of upcoming elections.
