A Nigerian pastor has sparked intense public debate after calling for the arrest of Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi hours after former United States President Donald Trump approved the bombing of ISIS linked terrorists in Sokoto. The call which was made through a viral online post has drawn mixed reactions across religious and political lines.
In his statement the pastor argued that certain public comments and past engagements by Sheikh Gumi amounted to sympathizing with or indirectly legitimizing extremist groups. He claimed that at a time when decisive military action is being taken against terrorism any figure perceived as undermining national security should be questioned by authorities.
Sheikh Gumi a well known Islamic scholar has previously advocated dialogue with armed groups a stance that has often placed him at the center of controversy. Supporters argue that his approach is aimed at reducing violence and understanding root causes while critics accuse him of being too lenient toward criminals.
The pastor maintained that the bombing approved by Trump sent a clear message that terrorism would no longer be tolerated and that internal actors perceived as enabling extremists should be investigated. He emphasized that his call was not rooted in religious bias but in national security concerns.
The post quickly went viral igniting heated discussions online. Some Nigerians supported the call insisting that all voices influencing security matters must be accountable. Others condemned it as inflammatory dangerous and capable of worsening religious tensions in an already polarized society.
Security analysts caution against politicizing counterterrorism efforts and stress the importance of evidence based investigations. They warn that arrest calls made without due process can undermine rule of law and fuel mistrust between communities.
Authorities have not responded officially to the pastor’s demand. However the incident reflects heightened sensitivity around security issues and the role of influential figures in shaping public opinion. As Nigeria continues to battle insurgency many citizens are calling for unity restraint and responsible discourse.
