Governor Alex Otti has confirmed two separate kidnap attempts in Olokoro and Ubakala, both in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, assuring residents that the situation is under control.

Speaking during his February media chat with journalists in Umuahia, Otti said he had been briefed by the Commissioner of Police on the incidents, which reportedly occurred the previous week.

“I am aware of those incidents and I can assure you that the police are on top of them,” the governor stated. He described the cases as isolated, adding that measures have been strengthened to prevent a recurrence.

The incidents allegedly involved individuals suspected to be cattle herders who fled the scene after intervention by operatives of the Abia State Homeland Security.

Beyond security concerns, Otti also addressed developments surrounding the reconstruction of the Enyimba Hotel. He clarified that the Abia State Government owns 80 percent of the facility, while the remaining 20 percent belongs to families associated with the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ACCIMA), who had previously invested in the property.

According to him, the ownership structure was determined after a valuation exercise. He disclosed that while the state currently holds majority shares, it does not intend to retain the entire stake, indicating openness to private investment.

Otti further revealed that international hotel brand Radisson Blu has signed on to manage the hotel, subject to meeting five-star operational standards. He noted that the brand’s involvement reflects confidence in the state’s economy and governance.

On environmental issues, the governor announced plans to dredge the Aba River to improve water flow and address pollution caused by waste disposal. He said companies discharging untreated waste into the river would face sanctions, stressing that it is illegal and irresponsible.

Regarding the alleged airport project initiated by the previous administration, Otti disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating funds linked to the project, expressing confidence that misappropriated funds would be recovered in due course.
