FES, MOROCCO – Super Eagles talisman Victor Osimhen has issued a powerful rallying cry to the Nigerian faithful, asserting that the squad is mentally prepared to secure a fourth continental crown at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The Galatasaray forward, currently in prolific form in the Turkish Süper Lig, spoke openly about the team’s determination to move beyond recent disappointments, specifically the painful 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in the 2023 final and the shock failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
A Quest for Redemption
For Osimhen, the tournament in Morocco represents a chance to heal the wounds of past campaigns. Speaking to Ademola Victor TV, the reigning African Footballer of the Year acknowledged the frustrations of the supporters but promised a squad fully committed to the cause.
“We have been so close, yet so far in recent years,” Osimhen admitted. “This AFCON is about proving a point. Our goal is to go all the way and lift the trophy. It will be a challenge, but given the talent within this squad, I genuinely believe we can reach the final and win it.”
Backing the Management
The Super Eagles are under significant pressure following their World Cup qualifying exit, yet Osimhen remains confident in the current coaching staff and their preparations for the group stages.
“The lads are ready,” he added. “The manager and the backroom staff have done a brilliant job. We have dissected the errors made in the previous AFCON and our recent play-off matches to ensure we don’t repeat them.”
The “Galatasaray Effect”
The striker also touched upon his life in Istanbul, noting that the passionate support from Galatasaray fans has provided him with an extra layer of motivation on the international stage.
“The Galatasaray supporters have been incredible,” Osimhen remarked. “Even when I am away with Nigeria, I still feel their energy and support. It means a great deal to have that behind me as I represent my country.”
Group C: The Path to Glory
Nigeria find themselves in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. Their campaign officially gets underway on Tuesday, 30 December, with their opening fixture against Tanzania.
