The Ondo State Police Command has directed the immediate suspension of all night religious programmes across the state following growing security concerns.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, announced the directive while parading suspected kidnappers at the command headquarters in Akure, the state capital. He urged religious and community leaders, regardless of faith, to halt night gatherings until adequate security measures are put in place.
Lawal emphasized that religious leaders must consult with the police for proper security guidance if night services are considered essential. According to him, the decision became necessary due to the persistent rise in criminal activities, particularly kidnappings.
The directive follows the recent abduction of six worshippers at a Celestial Church in Uso community, Owo Local Government Area of the state. The police commissioner disclosed that five of the kidnapped victims are pregnant women, while one is physically challenged.
Expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident, Lawal questioned why a church facility was being used in a manner similar to a maternity centre. He stated that pregnant women should seek proper medical care in hospitals or recognized maternity homes rather than remain overnight at religious centres.
“I do not know when a church became a maternity home or hospital. If someone is pregnant, the best place is a hospital or a maternity home,” he said.
The police boss further revealed that official communication had been sent to all area commanders across the state, instructing them to notify religious leaders including Muslim, Christian, and traditional worshippers to suspend night worship activities until further notice.
Lawal reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and worshippers. He assured the public that security agencies are intensifying efforts to curb criminal activities and secure the release of abducted victims.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist in tackling insecurity in the state.
