The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Ogun State Chapter, has issued a fresh seven-day ultimatum to the Ogun State Government over unresolved issues affecting workers in the local government service.
The State President of NULGE, Comrade Adefesobi Adebayo, announced the ultimatum during a press conference at the union secretariat on Tuesday in Abeokuta. The new directive follows the expiration of a previous 14-day ultimatum issued by the union two weeks ago.
Adefesobi expressed dissatisfaction over what the union described as the government’s failure to respond to earlier correspondences dated January 21 and January 28, 2026, which highlighted pressing concerns “militating against the Local Government Service in Ogun State.” He noted that the government’s alleged inaction has dampened morale among workers at the third tier of government and eroded trust across the 20 local government areas of the state.
The new seven-day ultimatum runs from Wednesday, February 18, to Thursday, February 26, 2026, during which the union expects the government to address its demands. Adefesobi warned that NULGE would not hesitate to embark on industrial action should the government fail to meet its expectations.
The union also criticized the non-implementation of the Memorandum of Action reached with organised labour on July 14, 2025, regarding the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), saying the delay had disappointed retirees in the local government service.
NULGE further lamented the state government’s interference in local government administration, noting that, despite the Supreme Court judgment, National Assembly pronouncement, and directive from President Bola Tinubu, Governor Dapo Abiodun has yet to implement full local government autonomy. The union said this has resulted in poorly furnished offices, inadequate infrastructure, and unmotivated workers, which have negatively affected grassroots administration.
“As a listening and labour-friendly governor, the union is hopeful that Your Excellency will address our demands with sincerity and urgency to avoid an industrial dispute across the 20 local government councils in Ogun State,” Adefesobi said. He added that NULGE leadership is ready to meet with the governor to resolve the matter amicably.
