The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following an incident involving a staff member of the scheme, who has now been taken into custody.
The confirmation was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by Caroline Embu, the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations. The scheme said the matter is under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the staff member allegedly linked to the incident has been arrested.
“The Scheme is aware of the news circulating in the media concerning the suspected involvement of a staff member. We wish to confirm that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody,” the statement read.
The NYSC expressed condolences to the family of the deceased corps member, describing the incident as tragic. The scheme assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement authorities to ensure justice is served. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is established and that justice is served,” the statement added.
The scheme also emphasized that it operates under a strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members and will not tolerate misconduct or abuse of office.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in Abeokuta, has drawn significant public attention on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the safety of corps members and the conduct of officials at the local government level.
A social media user, Judd Bankz, called for enhanced protection, stating, “The government should enforce some sort of security for corps members. Same news is being repeated daily.” Another user, Oleku Master, criticized the NYSC for not addressing previous cases, noting, “You can address this but failed to talk about the corps member that was kidnapped and dehumanized by bandits.”
Other users shared similar concerns, alleging prior complaints about officials had been ignored, allowing issues to escalate. One commenter, Musty, accused some officials of abusing authority over corps members, while Augustus suggested the situation reflects deeper systemic problems in how local government inspectors interact with corps members.
The NYSC, however, urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue, stressing that the safety, welfare, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority.
