The Nigerian government, through the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has formally apologized to passengers and stakeholders following a power outage at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) over the weekend.
In a statement on its official X account on Sunday, FAAN explained that the disruption was caused by a fault in the terminal’s changeover circuit. According to the agency, the issue arose during a routine power changeover process, which led to an interruption of electricity supply to critical airport operations.
FAAN assured the public that its technical teams were immediately deployed to manage the situation. Backup systems were activated, and the electricity supply was swiftly transferred to the secondary grid to restore normal operations. The authority said the quick intervention minimized disruptions and ensured that essential services continued at the airport.
“We acknowledge the power outage at MMIA Terminal 1 yesterday (weekend). The interruption was caused by an issue with the changeover circuit,” FAAN stated. “We apologize to all passengers and stakeholders affected by the disruption and any discomfort it caused.”
Passengers and airport users were reportedly inconvenienced by the outage, which temporarily affected check-in operations, baggage handling, and terminal services. However, airport officials confirmed that no flight operations were cancelled or significantly delayed as a result.
FAAN reiterated its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted power supply at MMIA and other federal airports across the country. The authority emphasized that it is reviewing its power management systems and preventive maintenance protocols to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
The agency also thanked passengers, airlines, and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the incident, assuring them that all necessary measures would be taken to enhance operational reliability and passenger comfort at Nigeria’s busiest international airport.
