In a tragic development, the body of Dr. Cletus Iwuagwu, a 71-year-old Nigerian doctor and respected university professor, has been discovered weeks after his disappearance in Springfield Township, Ohio, United States.
Dr. Iwuagwu, a geriatric medicine physician and professor at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, was last seen on November 24 after being discharged from a local hospital. He reportedly returned home but was declared missing the following day when family members could no longer reach him.
Surveillance footage later showed Dr. Iwuagwu near his home in Holland at approximately 2:15 a.m. on November 25, raising concerns about his wellbeing. A large-scale search effort involving law enforcement officers, drones, K-9 units, and community volunteers was launched, but weeks passed without a breakthrough.
On December 25, authorities recovered a body from Orchard Lake near Stone Oak Country Club. The Springfield Fire Department later confirmed that the remains belonged to Dr. Iwuagwu. An autopsy conducted by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office revealed that he died from drowning, with officials stating there were no signs of trauma or foul play.
While investigators say the case remains open to determine the full circumstances surrounding his death, the news has devastated both his family and the Nigerian-American community. Colleagues and students described Dr. Iwuagwu as a dedicated physician, mentor, and scholar whose loss leaves a significant void in the medical field.
