At least six persons have been killed by suspected armed bandits in Tungan-Makeri village, while a police station was set ablaze in nearby Konkoso community, both located in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack on Tungan-Makeri reportedly began at about 8:00 p.m. on Friday when a large group of heavily armed men stormed the village. Residents said the assailants, estimated to be over 200, fired sporadically, set several houses on fire, and operated for several hours.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the sustained assault left six villagers dead, while many others fled their homes to nearby bushes and neighbouring communities to escape the violence. Several houses and personal belongings were reportedly destroyed during the raid.

An eyewitness from Zagatina, a community along the attackers’ route, said he observed dozens of motorcycles conveying the armed men.

“They passed through my village and I counted about 41 motorcycles, with two or three persons on each motorcycle, including women and children on some,” the resident said.

“I quickly hid myself in the bush when I noticed them coming because they passed through the back of my house.”

Following the attack on Tungan-Makeri, the bandits were said to have moved into Konkoso in the early hours of Wednesday, where they reportedly operated without any visible security presence.

During the incursion, a police station in the town was set ablaze, further escalating tension and fear among residents. The incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in the area, with locals calling on the relevant authorities to urgently deploy security forces to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
