NDLEA Arrests 93-Year-Old, Doctor in Nationwide Drug Crackdown

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 93-year-old man and a 69-year-old medical doctor, along with several other suspects, during a series of coordinated anti-drug operations carried out across the country.

The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that the raids were intelligence-driven and executed in multiple states as part of efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks.

In Abia State, NDLEA operatives arrested a nonagenarian, Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, at his residence, where 7.7 kilograms of skunk were recovered. According to the agency, the suspect confessed to long-term drug use before venturing into distribution.

At the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, authorities apprehended an Ivorian national, Gohouri Michael, in possession of 1.49 kilograms of cocaine. A follow-up operation led to the arrest of a 69-year-old doctor, Dr Chudi Daniel Ofomata, in Ogun State, where additional drugs were reportedly recovered.

In Ogun State, three suspects were arrested with 34 kilograms of skunk, while in Imo State, a female suspect was caught with 56.2 kilograms of the substance. NDLEA operatives in Niger State also arrested a couple found with 118 kilograms of skunk stored in their home.

In Borno State, large quantities of controlled substances, including Rohypnol, codeine syrup, and injectable drugs, were intercepted, resulting in another arrest.

In Lagos, operatives intercepted 15 kilograms of “Loud,” a potent strain of cannabis, concealed in a commercial bus. In a separate operation, authorities seized 26,800 bottles of codeine syrup and arrested multiple suspects.

A raid in Abuja led to the arrest of eight individuals and the recovery of over 11 kilograms of skunk. Meanwhile, in Edo State, NDLEA officers intercepted two trucks carrying a combined 7,245 kilograms of skunk, with five suspects taken into custody.

The agency added that its War Against Drug Abuse advocacy campaign continues nationwide, targeting schools and communities to raise awareness about the dangers of illicit drug use.
