The Nigerian Bar Association has strongly condemned the reported assault on women during a cultural festival in Ozoro, Delta State, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
In a statement, the association described the incident as a gross violation of human rights and an affront to the dignity of women. It urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is served.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that several women were harassed and physically assaulted during the event, sparking outrage on social media and among civil society groups. Advocacy organizations have since called for stricter measures to protect women at public gatherings.
The Nigerian Bar Association emphasized that such acts must not be tolerated under any circumstances and warned that failure to hold perpetrators accountable could embolden others. It also called on event organizers to implement adequate security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Legal experts have highlighted the importance of enforcing existing laws on assault and gender-based violence, noting that swift action would serve as a deterrent.
